Welcome to the pedigree list!
Hello, my name’s Matt. I have a 1.5yr old male Doberman called Haku, named after the dragon in the Studio Ghibli film - Spirited Away :)
Here’s a photo of him and the original Haku for comparison:
Here’s the (longish) story behind why I started The Pedigree List.
I remember when I was researching whether the Doberman breed would be a good fit for my lifestyle and thinking at the time how hard it was to find all the relevant information and make an informed decision on if I can give this breed the care that it needs for the next 10+ years, if I would be happy doing so or if this was the utterly wrong dog for my lifestyle.
Most blogs or articles on Dobermans were from Doberman owners who had a biased view and it was hard to find 1 place with all the pros & cons of the breed that let me compare other features easily like shedding amount, drool levels, energy levels, exercise requirements, space needed, monthly costs, insurance costs, and the list goes on…
All the information was fragmented so I had to read & make notes on 10+ different articles, join 3+ Doberman Facebook groups, spend hours on Youtube and speak to multiple breeders who all said slightly different things on what the dog would actually be like at home.
It was overwhelming to say the least! After speaking to family and friends and doing widespread research online I kept hearing people say they struggled with this same problem.
When conducting research and speaking to 100+ dog owners and trainers i learned how many dogs and dog owners would have benefited from having an easy-to-use website with all the information in 1 place and also having community members share reviews on different dog breeds and provide real-time information on how much exercise they need, how much they cost each month and the unfiltered pros and cons of owning one.
Unfortunately, some people didn’t understand how much time or effort it would take to give the breed they chose a happy, fulfilled life.
Sadly, some even had to give their dogs to rescue shelters as they couldn’t cope with the exercise requirements.
I wanted to create this site for 2 reasons: Make it easy to find the perfect dog breed so that you and most importantly your new best friend lead a happy fulfilled life.
Reduce the number of dogs that go to shelters by helping pick the right dogs for them from the get-go.
**Disclaimer:** One thing I want to make abundantly clear is every dog is different! You can get 2 dogs from the same litter and 1 could be super confident and the other could be nervous.
This is why it is so important to speak to a good quality breeder or if you are rescuing a dog understand what it will take to help this dog post-rescue. Multiple factors come into play when getting a new dog including what the parent's temperaments were like, whether it is a working breed, whether it is bred for protection or families etc.
The contents of this site are made of community-formed generalizations which don’t 100% guarantee that your dog will share them. Although it’s not perfect, I hope at least it helps new owners make a more informed decision. I would always suggest meeting the dog in person and using a trusted breeder or shelter.
